Space requirements: Open space

Activity description:

  • Designate one child to be the zookeeper.
  • The zookeeper identifies and animal and everyone moves around the room like that animal.
  • When the zookeeper says “feeding time!”, the children run on the spot until a new animal is called.
  • Change zookeepers frequently.

Skill development:

  • Physical skills: running; coordination; spatial awareness
  • Non-physical skills: listening and following instructions; creative play; self-discovery; animal identification

Adjust the challenge:

  • Have children march on the spot rather than run.
