Island Jumping

Equipment: Hula hoops

Space requirements: Open space

Activity description:

  • Scatter ‘islands’ (hula hoops) throughout the space.
  • Children jump from one hoop to another, trying to avoid falling in the ‘water’.

Skill development:

  • Physical skills: jumping; landing; balancing; spatial awareness
  • Non-physical skills: decision making; critical thinking

Adjust the challenge:

  • Place the hoops closer together or farther apart.
  • Encourage the children to try different jumps: two foot jumps, one foot jumps, jump off two feet and land on one, jump off one foot and land on two.
